The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, with the 14th and current one, Tenzin Gyatso, born in 1935. He fled to India in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, escaping from Norbulingka, his summer palace in Lhasa. Norbulingka, meaning "Treasure Park" in Tibetan, was built in the 1740s by the 7th Dalai Lama and expanded over time. Spanning 36 hectares, it’s the largest man-made garden in Tibet, featuring palaces like Kelsang Phodrong and Takten Migyur Phodrong, built by the 14th Dalai Lama. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, it’s a blend of Tibetan architecture and lush gardens, once a hub for the Dalai Lamas’ summer governance and now a cultural landmark. https://www.greattibettour.com/tibet-attractions/norbulingka-289
